How can I talk tomy adult son about alcohol abuse?
1) Talk to him when he is sober.
#2) Tell him you love him and you are concerned about his well being.
#3) Tell him you have noticed that he is drinking to much because his drinking is interfering with his (health, safety, job, finances, relationships) which ever apply.
#4) Tell him you want him to get control and you want him to get help if he needs to.
#5) If you can express confidence in his ability to get things under control.
If he is cooperative and non resistant you will be very fortunate.
More likely he will be resistant. If he is resistant go as far as he will tolerate on the steps above and then leave of the conversation and pick it up again a couple of days later. Do this as many times as is takes to get through the whole message (steps 1-5 above).
#6) Ask him for his commitment to address the problem.
If you get all the way through the steps but he does not follow through, start over from the top.
Hope this helps.
