The first thing he should do is discuss this with his psychiatrist if he hasn't already.
Second, he should have a complete medical work-up. There a several conditions that cause personality change, and they need to be ruled out. Here's several articles that list some of the potential causes:

In some cases I will need more info about your original question. Antidepressant medication treats the pain which is connected with the depression. When your friend says that she is not depressed as you state yourself in your further comment she is stating that the pain connected with the depression is absent. The medicines do not affect the psychological process behind the depression otherwise. So in a way the person you are dealing with now "is" another person but without the pain connected with the depression itself. The clinical improvement from depression will happen only when the emotional conflicts connected with the depression will be solved and will be in place. In a word: the effect of the medicines on the depressive patient is not "perfect" How the patients improves depends strictly from how much the emotional process is solved.
