I am afraid to say but the information you have provided is very little to comment up on the possible diagnosis. I will still try to explain it to you.
Chemical imbalance is hypothesized to be the cause of nearly all mental illness.
You have mentioned that she was on Ritalin during her childhood and Ritalin is usually prescribed in children suffering from ADHD so may be she was suffering from ADHD during her childhood.
What is ADHD?
Bipolar illness or Manic depression are the two name of same diagnosis in which a patient may have manic symptoms or depressive symptoms or both.
What is Bipolar illness / Manic depression?
She is currently on antidepressant which is given to patient suffering from Depression but are usually avoided in patients suffering from Bipolar illness because they may destabilize the mood further.
On the basis of her current medication, she is most likely suffering from Depression but on the basis of symptoms you have mentioned and since she has a strong family history of Bipolar disorder and past history of ?ADHD, Bipolar II disorder could also be a possibility in her case.
Whether it is Depression or Bipolar disorder both of them respond well to medicines and you need not to worry about it too much.
Considering the nature of your son "MY SON HAS A CARETAKER PERSONALITY AND CARES DEEPLY FOR HIS MARRIAGE AND ABOVE ALL, FOR HIS CHILDREN" he and his family is going to live a happy and normal life as most other families do.
