We are grandparents with a granddaughter who just turned 4.

We are grandparents with a granddaughter who just turned 4. A good part of her life we have cared for her because our daughter is diagnosed with ADD, Bi-Polar and boarderline personality disorder. She is also an addict. Alcohol mostly but has done every drug except meth and heroine.She has also previously done 10 to 20 times the recommended dosage of over the counter cold medications. Mostly Coracidine. That was @ 16 and for a few months if not longer. She is now 22. She is a vegatarian that hates vegtables. She is a complex carb eater, so her diet is terrible on top of it. She recently got a DUI and could not meet the obligations to that. She was going to jail. She entered a rehab program (in house) 4 weeks ago. We feel it was to avoid jail time, but what ever the reason, it couldn't hurt. This is the 7th time she has been in treatment. During all of this there is a child. Dad is not involved with her. He has 3 children by 3 women and does not see them. He is on the birth certificate though. He and his parents use, sexual assalt allegations were brought to the counties attention on his other daughter who was 3 at the time. Dad and grandpa were mentioned. That situation is terrible also, so he is not an option. Our daughter crashes and burns for periods of time. We have tried to help her but she does not follow through on meds or out patient treatment recommendations. Now her re-hab counselors want to send her and her daughter to a half way house 3 hours away. After 10 years of substance abuse and mental disorders they feel 6 weeks of treatment is a good base and they should reunite. We convinced our daughter through all these treatment programs to leave the child with us , so she could concentrate on getting herself better. She has and we have brought them together and encouraged the relationship to keep the 2 together. After programs it lasts a couple to a few months but then depression sets in or she uses again. They are currently homeless. She does not have a job. They want her to do the program at the half way house. Take parenting classes and work part-time. Leaving our grand daughter in a in house daycare. We are trying with everything we have to convince her counselors that she needs to get better before the can be alone together for 3-4 months. The child would be taken from us, her daycare which she loves, her sister who is 5 now, they are very close and her emotional stability as well as her sense of safety and security. They say kids are resilient. I say how resilient can they be? 5 of her closest family members and her daycare provider are writing letters that they will read and take into consideration on their recommendation. My husband I are going to a family day on Monday and giving them the letters. They will not discuss or have private sessions with family members as a respect for their clients. Our daughter does not want us there and has asked us not to write letters for family day, so they will not let us share our concerns with her. She wants to take her daughter there. She said she will be fine it is us that will miss her. She has claimed many times that she is the worlds best mother. They love each other and are good together for short periods of time. Other wise mom goes into over load and we go pick up our grand daughter. She has her Saturdays at 1 pm until Sunday at 730. That has been 4 times in a month and 1 of thoes 4 she called us to come and get our granddaughter. They were both crying. We are offering to bring her for visitation as often as she needs to see her. We want them to be together , healthy. She is terribly unhealthy now and needs help. Natalie is extremely close to all of us. She cries when she has to go just over night. I am so worried about what this will do to her well being. We have witnessed women that have been beaten to a pulp. Children running around them. They are all there for addiction. Alot of it is Meth. I have never been in a half way house , but is it a place for a child? The fact that her mother wants to do this to her tells me she is not looking out for the well being of her child. I am not a professional, but what are they thinking? Natalie has a safe place to be. Please help us with what you think. We just found all this out and we only have 2 weeks before they leave. Mom also uses our granddaughter. When she gets mad at us she does not let us see each other. She has to authorize visitation for us to come and visit. She is very upset with us now. I am not sure she would allow us to visit. What consequences do you feel this will have on our grand daughter? Do you have any statistics on mental health for children? Possibly indicators of emotional well being. I have searched on line and it is so vast I am not able to find specifics on developmental issues for young people. I told him he is looking to his future for job security because in 10 15 years she will be in there if they keep this up. Please help... Thankyou, Cyndy ***@******.***
