I am 25 and, I...

I am 25 and, I was diagnosed with anxiety two years ago and am taking escitalopram 20mg each day, which really helped at first to stop negative thoughts and self doubt, but have found that since having stress with my last job of three months, and issues and changes in my relationship with my partner, I have been on a rollercoaster of emotions since November 2010 when these changes occured. At the start of this job I also was diagnosed with ADHD, as I have always had trouble focusing in every workplace since i was younger, non stop talking and butting in on peoples conversations, struggling to listen to people, just feeling that information wasnt getting into my head like it should, and feeling like I couldnt reach my full potential due to this. So i started on dexamphetamine tablets 5mg, 2 at 7am & 2 at 12.30 pm, which increased to 3 & 3. I felt that it was too much, and due to losing my job, as i was told the job seemed too much for me, panicked and reduced the dose down to 2 & 2 again. I noticed that the day didnt seem to go by so quick and wondered if the tablets made me like a zombie, where i thought i was focused, but maybe doing things too slow? I also felt my bubbly personality come back, as the tablets seemed to make me very reserved, and i felt i didnt connect with people easily like i have always done. I am really not sure what the right thing is for me? I have now started a new job, but have found myself a bit unconfident, and have noticed that i am losing concentration mid morning and late afternoon, but if i stay at work a bit later, after others are gone i dont feel distracted and can get my work done alot quicker. I want to make sure i can do my best with this job, and want some advice on how i can manage with these concentration problems, and self-doubt. The psychiatrist that prescribes me the dexamphetamine does not really give me advice on how being on both medications will affect me, so i am seeking further advice. I am also anemic and vitamin b deficient, so take iron & vit b tablets. I struggle with taking my medications at exact times too. I have also recently seen a psychologist who thinks that i have co-dependency issues with my partner, as I have been having abandoment problems with him, which has been a negative and guilty place for me, but i feel unable to control myself. I seem to be fine for a few days then it all goes bad again. I am on a good run at the moment and trying really hard to stay positive about giving my parter and myself space, and then doing things together without getting hysterical when he wants to go home etc.. All these things are just so much to deal with and I want to help myself while i am in a positive state, so that i can cope when im not feeling so good.

Hi! You know, to give you the best answer, I think I should ask you a few questions first that will help define the problem and the situation.

You said you just started seeing a psychologist right now. Most of your questions, then, need to be asked of the psychologist depending on how that is going. How often are you seeing the psychologist?

Are you confident in the psychologist so far? Would you feel comfortable talking with the psychologist about these things?

Are you planning on the problem of controlling yourself with the psychologist?

How did the counseling 2 years ago go? What was it for?

Any extra information that will help, feel free to share.

Hi Dr Mark,
I saw a new psycologist two weeks ago, but she hurt he back last week and is in hospital. I am not sure of her yet, as i told her of the medications i was taking, but she seemed more interested in diagnosing me with co dependency and offering me a book to purchase and read. She was meant to be starting a class last Saturday with about 7 others who have the same issues. While i think that this will be helpful for me in the long run, and i am going to go to the classes when they start, I am really just wanting an answer to how the medications could be affecting me, as the psycologist did not answer my questions regarding the medication.
Am i correct in saying that only some psychologists are clinical, and able to advise on medication?
When i saw the last psycologist at a womens health clinic two years agao, she helped me using CBT, and just discussing issues with me. I was going through a rough time, unable to find an account job, due to the recession here, but felt better once i got a job.
The problem seems to be that i need to be able to handle when things are not so good. I dont handle things well when they are out of my control, it usually makes me feel angry.
I am very short tempered, and have even considered that i may have bipolar, as i seem to go up and down alot, even due to the slightest things. I am very bad with spending alot of money when i am in a situation where i shouldnt. I feel like i have to 'make myself happy' and forget about my problems, but end up regretting it when i get home.
I havent had a chance to work on 'controlling myself', with the psycologist yet, as we only had one session. I am not sure i will be seeing her again, i still havent decided. I have had a 'good' week and 1/2 tho, been good with 'letting go' of my partner, and doing things for myself, doing meditation at night before bed, walking the dogs,making healthy dinners, keeping the dishes done etc...
I am a bit concerned that my mood may change again, but am trying to focus on doing positive things to help myself, and not focus on that worry. My new job is very full on and i am doing ok, but have a deadline for march accounts by this friday, and cant see that i will be able to get all the work done. i am trying not to stress, so that i can focus on getting the job done.
I do feel worried that others will end up thinking i am not good enough for the job, due to what happened before, but know that i should be more confident in myself. i just want to know how to do everything straight away and catch up on all the work i have behind me, but it is not possible with out time. i find that i put off tasks that are more difficult. I am trying to set up my workspace to suit me, and using lots of reminders and colour coding etc...
So basically, if the anti-depressants are meant to stop me from getting depressed, then why i am so emotional still?
I am not sure if i am on the right amount of dexamphetamine? or i f i should be on them at all. I think they help, but 3 & 3 was too much, and 2 & 2 that i am back on now, seems to wear off mid morning and late afternoon. I feel like it is alot easier to concentrate after 4.30pm when most people in the office have gone home and there is no distractions.
