Yes, you do need a professional degree to become a psychologist. If you're interested in general in the mental health field there are several broad fields to choose from - psychology, clinical social work, counseling, psychiatry (a branch of medicine so doctors can specialize in psychiatry).

If you are currently in college and are yet to choose your major you can opt for psychology and other related fields so that you can get a job in these fields after graduation. After that you can pursue a post graduation degree (Masters) if you enjoy the field and want to continue in it.
