Hello. I would like to help. I'm a licensed marriage and family therapist in California. It sounds to me that you are very much done with this marriage, and are only staying in the marriage for the sake of the kids, and maybe some financial issues. Yes, it is true that divorce is rough on children, but what is ALSO rough on kids is a marriage that is not healthy, where children are subject to seeing their parents often fight, or belittle each other or disengage from one another. If you truly do not respect your husband, and you want to find a new life, divorce is a better option than staying.

Staying in a marriage where you are unhappy is rough on the kids too. They are not getting the best either you or your husband has to offer them because you are both so unhappy. What I recommend is to get a divorce in a manner that is the least painful and safest for your children. Visit a family therapist in your area to make the transition smooth and as painless as possible for the kids.
