Absolutely consult a psychiatrist not just your GP for medication management. The counseling is going to be helpful and both medication and therapy can help you manage the depression and obtrusive thinking. It is a working process and you may encounter set backs (depending on the progress you're making)
There are in deed different medications and a psychiatrist would be able to offer knowledge on the different options. As you know, each individual responds differently to the same medication and dosage. That way the biophysiological part of the depression and anxiety will be addressed. A psychiatrist may also assist in ruling out other possibilities such as SAD (seasonal affect disorder) a sleep disorder, etc.
Another option would be to look into hypnotherapy for the obsessive thoughts.
The pros are that it does work (it all depends on the ability of the client to remain relaxed yet fully concentrated on the therapist's inductions) During hypnotherapy, the client's brain functions at alpha or theta brain waves which, is what allows for positive changes to take place in their subconscious mind. It is not needed to be in the deeper levels unless you're seeking pain management control. There are not a whole lot of cons - all hypnosis is really self hypnosis and the therapist assists with the inductions. If you are to consult a hypnotherapist, you really want to see someone who at least has a mental health or a nursing degree and is certified in hypnotherapy.
