You know, there is a general conception that counselling is there for some clinically diagnosed mental health disorder. Well, yes it is. But even medicine now is no longer JUST for clinically diagnosed diseases. There's the whole field of health and wellness in medicine: how to feel better by doing things medically to promote health. The same is true for counselling and therapy. There is the whole field of how to promote doing better than you were before you started therapy.
So how would you know if you need therapy or counselling? Well, you base it on how much you feel your problem(s) are holding you back from doing your best. Same as in the medical example above. If this sense of competitive drive has now come into your consciousness as something you need to work on and you are not finding good ways to grow and develop on your own, then counselling is a worthwhile option.
I would like you to interview counsellors in your area who have a more humanistic focus. I don't know which country you are in so look for therapist directories that list the type of orientation the counsellor practices. There are online directories that often give you a blurb by the therapist and sometimes even a photo.
You are at a good age to seek counselling. You are old enough to be able to look within yourself and you are young enough to be willing to take a chance on changing. I wish you the very best!

I imagine that if you look up in the internet a therapy directory that gives you a detailed description of each therapist's orientation, you will be able to see who in your area lists humanistic therapy in their orientation.
I do see in my directories that there are two associations that may be very useful for finding a therapist in the UK:
The first is the UK Association for Humanistic Psychology Practitioners and I see the web address is: http://www.ahpp.org
Then there is the Association for Humanistic Psychology in Britain. But you know, now that I look at their listing, it is really for the professionals and doesn't indicate they have a directory for people to use. So I won't bother with their web address. But it does indicate that humanistic psychology is very active in the UK!
It's very important to remember that you need to feel confident in and comfortable with your therapist, so don't feel like you have to accept the first person you interview.
