Good morning. Thanks for writing to JA.
Ideally, Asperger's Disorder (like any of the Autism Spectrum Disorders) is assessed through a Multidisciplinary Evaluation... although some will do so without all disciplines represented. The following components of an evaluation are ideal:
- Developmental Pediatrician (to rule out any medical factors) (*)
- Psychologist (to assess cognitive, behavioral, social skills) (*)
- Speech/Language Pathologist (to assess communication)
- Occupational Therapist (to assess sensory/fine motor)
- Educational Specialist (to assess impact on education)
(*) These professionals can diagnose Asperger's Disorder.
Most frequently, these assessments are conducted through a Children's Hospital/Medical Center. Occasionally, they can be conducted through a local school district, for free, ...but these professionals may not feel comfortable coming to any diagnostic conclusions.
Some evaluations can be conducted over and intense 1-2 period of assessment. Some
prefer to spread the assessments over time (6-8 weeks). Each setting is slightly different about their approach - and both have validity. Communicating/coordinating evaluation results with school districts is vitally important - and some settings provide these services as part of the evaluation... some do not.
I hope you find this information helpful - and hope that your son (and whole family) is doing well.
