Based upon your responses, I am going to conclude...

1. Is there a history of any mental illness in the family that you are aware of? Any history of substance abuse in the family?

Perhaps, but no significant indication of frank mental illness such a Bipolar Disorder. No significant family history of substance abuse.

2. Does your mother have any history of mental illness in the past including anxiety, depression, Bipolar, or substance abuse?

Family reports some history of mild-to-moderate anxiety and depression. Little else.

3. Have there been any unusual or stressful events that have occurred in the last 3 months in your mom's or family's life?

Ah ha! You indicate that your mom may have rekindled some previous romantic interest. Yes, this interest may only be electronic at this point, and I do not suggest that she is having a physical affair. Perhaps she is experiencing longing for youth and prior love just in her imagination.

I asked these questions because my initial thought was that your mother was experiencing a manic or hypomanic episode often associated with Bipolar I or Bipolar II Disorder. This seems less likely the case, but still a possibility.

In some cases, individuals who are actively abusing substances will also display the behaviors you describe... but you give little indication that this is happening.

There may be reason to be concerned for your mother - and she could surely benefit from talking to someone (a psychologist, therapist, religious member, friend outside of the family) about what has been happening with her lately.

A professional mental health professional would likely be able to better discern if she is suffering from a truly manic/hypomanic episode or acute substance intoxication if s/he could actually work with, observe, and talk to your mother. If nothing else, such a meeting might convey the message that the family has noticed her behavior and is concerned. It might also open the door to further discussion, so that she might be able to air more productively her feelings.
