1) personality disorder such as narcissistic or borderline
2) some underlying depressive disorder
Even though he may not be physically abusive, it sounds like he is verbally/emotionally afflicting you by his statements. The fact that he does not see anything wrong with himself is a sign that his reality testing is impaired.

It sounds like she had tried the counseling session with him. He has to want to work on the issues and the marriage.
She could try to set up some kind of an ultimatum with him (see if that propels him to seek the change) Otherwise, she won't be able to do it all by herself. Perhaps finding another marriage therapist? A good clinician would be able to figure out if something is not well.
