My daughter's boyfriend tells her he is having panic attacks

Customer Question

My daughter's boyfriend tells her he is having panic attacks when they argue. He will clinch his fists, shake, moan,or yell. He will do this during more heated moments. He will also stop yell at her then react the same way again. Is this anger issues or panic attack. I fear for her safety

It sounds like your daughter's boyfriend might have some of both- anxiety and anger management problems. Certainly panic attacks can be brought on by extreme anger and someone's fear that they will become "out of control" in the face of their anger. I would encourage this man to get some professional help in managing both anxiety and anger, and would also encourage your daughter to think about specific ways to keep herself safe during these moments. It might additionally be useful for them to seek couple's counseling as these kinds of issues can cause enormous strain on a relationship.
