2012 Freightliner M2 106...

2012 Freightliner M2 106 8.3l isc 149k miles check engine light on truck in a slightly reduced power mode which it has been in for a month apparently. Tech originally said it needed and ecm update and not is saying code 2637 & 3714 and immediately wants to throw and new doc in ($3,700 plus labor. I have read several forums on inspection of doc face, cleaning ect. Looking for a straightforward test procedure answer

Mechanic's Assistant: Is the check engine light blinking or flashing, or is it solid? When did you last change the oil?

Ecm update and now is saying i meant solid light oil 1,000 miles ago and may have been overfilled slightly

Mechanic's Assistant: What's the make/model of your 2012 freightliner?

M2 106 with an 8.3 isc

Good morning and welcome to JustAnswer! I'm Nick and I'll be helping you out today. I never replace these DOCs unless they are physically damaged. Usually they just need to be cleaned. In your case I would typically follow these procedures:

  • Remove and inspect the DOC and DPF. Clean the DOC. Clean or replace the DPF.
  • Remove the EGR differential pressure sensor and EGR valve. Thoroughly clean the sensor ports with a rubber tipped blow gun.
  • Perform an overhead adjustment on all valves.
  • Replace the fuel filters and air filter if they are not fresh.

I'll pull the DOC reuse guidelines for you in a few minutes. The older, 2007 model DOCs, do tend to degrade over time. The 2010 and later ones rarely have issues.

Thank you. Yes it's a 2012. what is the cleaning procedure for the DOC same as DPF light pressure wash air combo repeated until clean?
Technician: Nich1019, Cummins/Caterpillar Technician replied 9 months ago
The DPF should be cleaned in a special machine to collect the soot and ash. The machine will use air only to clean the DPF and it blows air into both ends. The DOC can be cleaned with the same machine, but since there is going to be a small volume of soot/ash it can be cleaned with just compressed air. I use a blow gun and just blow it out.

Thank you. What is usual labor time for the above procedures? And what's is labor time for just doc removal/reinstall if you are able to advise?I was able to perform a forced regen does this change anything?
Technician: Nich1019, Cummins/Caterpillar Technician replied 9 months ago
The typical labor range would be:

  • 4.5 hours to remove, clean and or replace DPF/DOC.
  • 1.5 to 2 hours to clean EGR components.
  • 3 to 4 hours to perform overhead adjustment.
  • .5 for fuel filters.
  • .2 to .5 for air filter.

To only replace the DOC: 3 to 4 hours.

If you were able to complete a regen it could have cleared out the DOC or at least cleared it out enough. You'll probably have issues later on down the road but that could be days or weeks later.

Since a forced regen was completed it was only driven 5 miles to the service center. Will my tech need to clear the 2 codes? How is the reduced power mode reset?Theoretically If the regen even did anything.
Technician: Nich1019, Cummins/Caterpillar Technician replied 9 months ago

The 2637 needs to become inactive. Usually a regen will accomplish this. If not it can be cleared manually. Then the 3714 can be cleared manually. In some cases clearing the 2637 manually will cause the 3714 to become stuck and the ECM needs to be flashed to clear it out.

Thank you. I think I think all my questions are almost answered. What is the average cost of a new doc filter and do you only recommend freightliner or the original part?
Technician: Nich1019, Cummins/Caterpillar Technician replied 9 months ago

A DOC can range between 1500 and 3500 depending on the part number and availability. You can get the part at any Cummins service center (Peterbilt, Kenworth, Cummins, Freightliner, etc.). I would use the Cummins part as opposed to aftermarket, but I haven't heard anything bad about aftermarket DOCs and DPFs.

I forgot to ask one more question if you were still available. Would there be anything preventing my tech from clearing those two codes besides what you said about the 3714 code. Or would they be able to be cleared and if the problem still exist it would show up after driving again
Technician: Nich1019, Cummins/Caterpillar Technician replied 9 months ago

He should be able to clear them manually unless the stuck 3714 happens. Cummins is pretty good about that as opposed to some other engine manufacturers.
