I have a 2003...

I have a 2003 379 c15 6nz. My oil tempos at 220 with a new teltek gauge and sensor. My water temp shows around 220-225 when working the motor is working hard. I thought it sounds high. Have new thermostats in, it helped the baseline temperature but the truck still climbs to the higher temps. Avg temp I would say oil is at 200 and water at 200 but any slight hill and it climbs fairly quick. What could be the issue?

Mechanic's Assistant: Sometimes things that you think will be really complicated end up being easy to fix. The Heavy Truck Mechanic I'm going to connect you with knows all the tricks and shortcuts.

Thanks for asking your question. I will try and help you out.
Actually i see oil temps around 200 often. It’s a calculation by the engine ecm and sent over the j1939 to the gauge. When it is reading high or low. I often find the gauge faulty. Please reply back if you need more help. I am happy to assist.

I have an aftermarket oil temperature guage, it is not through the ecm.

Where is the sensor located?
Ask Your Own Medium and Heavy Trucks Question
Customer reply replied 3 years ago
It is located in the oil pan
Technician: Cat Man, Cat Engine Expert replied 3 years ago
Thanks for the information.
That’s where it should be. However the temps you are describing sound like normal. Since it only appears to get high under load. I must suspect the radiator is partially plugged on the inside or outside. When this happens. The engine will run hotter under load first before at low load.

Okay so 220 on the oil and 220-225 on water are normal?
Technician: Cat Man, Cat Engine Expert replied 3 years ago
Under a heavy pull. Yes.

Okay, what temps would be considered as the "red zone"? My understanding of the c15 was that anything over 215 then you need to start backing out of it
Technician: Cat Man, Cat Engine Expert replied 3 years ago
No 215 is not too hot. The fan will not come on until 217. If 215 was too hot. Cat would have it come on sooner.
Too hot is 230 or higher. That’s when the high temp warning comes on.
Many people think running cooler better. Not so. If cooler was better. Cat would make it so.Please reply back if you need more help. I am happy to assist.

Okay, last question, do the water temp and oil temp run close together or should the oil be hotter than the water?
Technician: Cat Man, Cat Engine Expert replied 3 years ago
They normally run close together
