this truck has a eaton utraplus automatic transmission and has a output speed sencor code which is code 3328, code 3526 which is wheel based speed sencor and code 285 SID 231.

Hi my name is***** with me while I look up these codes for you.

This fault 285 can occur for the following reasons:

  • When the ECM is set up properly (components enabled and OEM VECU source addressed correctly) to receive information from an OEM VECU, but the OEM VECU is actually transmitting a message that says that component is not available for multiplexing. This can be caused when a multiplexed component is enabled in the Cummins® ECM, but the OEM VECU source address of the VECU transmitting the component message is incorrect in the Cummins ECM, or the OEM VECU is not set up to transmit the multiplexed component message.
  • This fault can also be caused by a malfunctioning J1939 data link connection between the OEM VECU and CumminsECM, a malfunctioning connection between the component and the OEM VECU, malfunctioning OEM VECU or malfunctioning Cummins® ECM.

this truck had a software update recently by cummins around 3 months ago. i am able to delete these codes and 2 codes will come back right away with the truck engine light on. the 2 code remains are 3328 and 3526i know what the codes. my question is will this codes effect the regen status?

Thanks for the info. Those are all speed sensor related so either there is a wiring issue at the transmission speed sensor or a faulty sensor and potentially a software issue.

Yes but it sounds more like there is a software related issue going on. I would fix the speed sensor problem and then reset the codes after successful repair and then try a regen

If it will not complete you will need to have the software reset . If unsuccessful there can be a faulty ECM but that is the last thing to go after.

The output speed sensor does have connection with the regen on these trucks?

VSS measures road speed so the ECM is also getting that signal for passive regen while driving.

That is how the ECM knows the truck is moving

Also I have seen faulty VSS sensors not allow the engine RPM to go much higher than 1500-1600-RPMs. The ECM needs to see VSS speed for its information.

i called the dealer for the output speed sensor and they know what that is but i asked them about vehicle based speed sensor, they had no idea. do you know where they are located?

The tailshaft of the transmission.

what transmission is in this truck?

Eaton will be behind the driveshaft yoke at the tail of the transmission

you are right about the rpm not going more then 1600 rpm.

Look for broken wires or corroded connections and if okay replace the sensor. Turn in until it bottoms lightly and back out 1/2 -3/4 turn, hold in place with a wrench and tighten the lock nut.

Installing the sencor today and will let you know soon. Customer took the truck to work it since the sencor took too long to show up.

Regen in process. It's been 35 mins. Everything looks ok for now. What should the atmospheric pressure should be?EGR opening. 0.5%

Temp after filter. 1080f

Regen completed in 1 hour 20 mins. Now there is a fault code 3751. Only that code.
