Hi. Thanks for asking your question! I will try and help you out.
Can you get me the engine serial number please? I need to know if this is a Mechanical 3116 with a governor or an Electronic 3116 with a computer on it.
How hot is the engine getting up to?

ENGINE# ***** engine will shut down gauge goes in red but only on the highway. Engine struggles to do 50-55mph
Technician: Cat Man, Cat Engine Expert replied 3 years ago
Thanks for the information.
I would first want to verify the temp. I have seen sensors read wrong and make the engine appear to be running hot.
If the engine is indeed runnin hot and the sensors was reading correctly. There are only two other things i have seen cause this.
The first is a collapsing lower radiator hose.
Second is a resticted oil cooler.
Please reply back if you need more help or have more questions. I am happy to assist.

1997 Cummins 8.3 running hot, The motor is in a garbage
The motor is in a garbage truck. It normally runs at about 195-200. The last week or two it starts to climb over 220. If you are driving from stop to stop for several hrs it stays around normal. But if you start to drive farther distance it starts to go up. When we go to the landfill it will get real close to the red line and if you let off the throttle to idle it will drop down but not to 200. We have replaced the coolant sensor and that didnt fix it. It is the original radiator. The coolant has been changed with the coolant filter since the truck was new. My mechanic thinks I need a new radiator. The fins are clean so there is no dirt or bugs obstructing air flow … read more
