I have a 2005 international 4300 with a dt466e, it was running…

I have a 2005 international...
I have a 2005 international 4300 with a dt466e, it was running very poor and finally would top out at around 10mph. We pulled codes and it has 421-426, 525, 534. It has set for about a week and went to start it, it will crank-fire and act as though it starts and immediately die. It seems to be getting fuel, after cranking it smells like fuel and cloud of black smoke. We have checked connections at the battery and starter for loose or bad connection but found nothing..

Sorry about the "chat ended " message ! I just switched our session to a different format so we may continue . Can we start with the last 8 digits of the vin number please? 525 is a code for the Injector driver module and I believe there is no troubleshooting for that fault ! When this fault comes up , it simply leads to replace the IDM .

IDM fault


  • DTC 525 is set by the ECM when there is an
    internal IDM failure. When DTC 525 is set, replace the IDM.
  • When DTC 525 is active the amber ENGINE lamp is
    illuminated.

Where is the idm and what does it look like. And couldn't get progressively worse ultimately causing a no start.

It is mounted together with the ECM and the EGR driver module down low on the left hand side of the engine just above the starter. THe IDM has 3 Connectors on it with one being larger than the other 2 .

Ok, can we install the IDM and then drive the truck to have it programmed or is there an IDM that is pre-programmed? Our International dealer said there is not a pre-programmed IDM but they have not always given us good information. Also is there anything that should be replaced or must be replaced when changing an IDM?

They sell IDM halves now where you can split the IDM open and just replace the bad half which is usually the injector drivers themselves . Easy to do and if you replace just the half ,there is no programming to do . In all cases that I have seen in the past ,this resolves the issue. Cheaper that way too .

thank you so much for all of this information. Especially for the information in your last post. We nearly spent $1000 on a new IDM plus programming when we only needed the $180 IDM half. You will definitely receive a bonus for this. Thank you so much.

what is the best way to remove that stupid idm from the truck. i just want to see what bolts i need to remove as it is buried behind pipes and wires and stuff..

Thanks! I work for an International dealer and have done this job several times ! You need to pull the left front fender and turn the steering wheel all the way to the right to be able to get under there to gain access to it . Disconnect the batteries because you will be working near the starter area and don't want to arc out on the positive post on starter . The EGR driver module is in front of the IDM and the IDM is mounted to the ECM so the best way to work with this is to pull the four bolts that mount the ECM to the block and pull the whole assy out . You also have to remove the air intake heater relay bracket mounted on the rear of the ECM bracket. To pull the whole assy out , you will also have to pull the fuel lines off the Fuel filter module and unbolt and remove the module . Once you the assy out , you will need to spray penetrating fluid on the bolts to separate the ECM from the IDM. The longer you let this sit with penetrtating fluid , the better because sometimes they are seriously corroded stuck together so lots of fluid and maybe a heat gun to get them separated . The instructions for the IDM half are in the box . The fuel filter module mounting gasket is re- useable so you don't need to replace it but I would replace the fuel line quad rings. Good luck and I will be around if needed!
