Hi. Thanks for using JA! I will try and help you out.

The the oil temp recently start running higher?

Also, when you say your hoses are melting, what hoses are they? Blow by hose?

And lastly, how is the coolant temp? is it hot too? Or is ot OK?

I bought truck 2 1/2 yrs ago oil temp always ran at 190/200. Also coolant running round 200 no it's hosed running from coolant tank to water pump etc
Technician: Cat Man, Cat Engine Expert replied 10 years ago

I see. Thanks for the information.

190/200 is a normal oil temp. 210/220 is too high.

However, you most likely have a faulty oil temp gauge or sensor. I see this a lot.

In all my years I have not ever seen the oil temp run hot without the coolant temp running hot.Since your coolant temp is OK, I'm sure that the oil temp is not reading correctly.

Caterpillar does not put their own oil temp sensor. However there are 2 ways the engine reads it.

The first is a Pete Oil temp sensor. If your engine has an oil temp sensor, it will be located in the oil pan I would look there first. If you have one, I would suggest replacing it.

If you do not have a sensor in the pan, your gauge is most likely faulty. I see this a lot. Without a sensor the oil temp is calculated by the ECM and sent through the data link. The oil temp gauge picks up the signal and registers the temp.

My coolant temp will run higher if I don't have my fan running all day
Technician: Cat Man, Cat Engine Expert replied 10 years ago

Oh I see. Thanks for the information.

I was under the impression the coolant temp was all OK.

In this case, it sounds like you have a cooling system problem. I have seen this many times. If the fan has to stay on to keep the engine temp down, you most likely have a problem with either the thermostats or the radiator.

Your engine has 2 thermostats. If one of them is stuck closed you will need the fan to stay on to keep the engine cool. IF the thermostats are OK, you most likely have a partially restricted radiator. I say partially because the engine will stay cool with the fan on. If it had a major restriction, having the fan on would not help.

I would suggest having the thermostats tested or replaced, if they are OK, I would consider having the radiator removed and cleaned or replaced.

Please reply back if you need more help or have more questions.
