If acute hepatitis is present, which may be due to viruses, drugs, toxins, or ischemia, these enzymes rise in 1-2 weeks.

The levels of both enzymes do not correlate with clinical severity.Values increase early in the prodromal phase, peak before jaundice is maximal, and fall slowly during the recovery phase.
