Hi there, I was on vacation March 10-21. On March 15 I started wheezing a bit. I did 3 negative COVID tests, but I got worse over the coming days. By March 19th I knew to seek medical care. I saw a Doctor in Louisiana outside of New Orleans who did a chest x-ray, and a negative flu test. I was diagnosed with bronchitis. I was given 6 tablets of Azithromycin. I was directed to take 2 the first day and 1 each day following until I ran out. I ran out today and am still wheezing quite a bit. I also sense a sinus infection brewing. I have not been able to get into my family doctor. Should I look into extending my antibiotics?

I’ve been wheezing since the morning of March 15, so 8 days now, with treatment only starting on the 19th. It was an 8. I would say I’m a 5-6 now. I am improving, but definitely not better. At least I no longer have uncontrollable coughing fits.

Doctor's Assistant: How widespread is COVID-19 in your area?

I’m really not sure. Im in Barrie, On. Again, I have had 3 negative COVID tests and a negative flu test.

Doctor's Assistant: Have you used Azithromycin or anything similar before? What's your gender?

I took my last pill of Azithromycin this morning. To the best of my memory, this is the first time I’ve had this antibiotic. I am female, 47 years old

Doctor's Assistant: Anything else in your medical history you think the Doctor should know?

I’m not on any medications. I am over weight, but not diabetic and my blood pressure is normal. No, there is nothing I think the doctor needs to know

Yes, I am feeling a bit short of breath due to the wheezing.
I was having fever, but not today. I have not taken anything for fever.
Yes, I am coughing quite a bit. They also prescribed me Albuterol inhaler, promethazine-codine syrup for night and benzonatate for day time

It started within the last few hours. I have been blowing my nose non-stop todayThe sinus pressure started I mean. This is why I thought a sinus infection might be on the way…

Very thorough by the way!

Here are my thoughts.

1. You do not need more Zithromax. You took it and it actually stays in your system for long after you finish it. Its a longer lasting antibiotic. If you need more antibiotic Zithromax is not very effective for sinusitis. A choice such as Augmentin or Doxycylcine would be better. You would need a repeat visit and prescription for these.

2. For the persistent wheezing sometimes a short course of steroids well really help knock that out. Prednisone 20mg twice a day for 4 days may help. You need a prescription for these. I would continue the inhaler too.

3. For the sinuses Flonase nasal spray twice a day may help with the opening up your passages as can long acting antihistimines such as zyrtec can help. Thes are available over the counter.
