• The symptoms you have described along with the photograph suggest that this is external hemorrhoids.

• Condition is a result of formation of enlarged veins caused by increased pressure in the veins in the anus.

• External hemorrhoids form when these veins delete and appear on the surface of the anus.

• Constipation, excessive straining to pass stool, sitting on the commode for long periods and family history of hemorrhoids are all risk factors for getting the condition.

• 3 out of 4 people will have the condition at some time in their life.

• Most cases can be treated conservatively using local application of preparations containing mild steroids like hydrocortisone or witch Hazel containing pads. Numbing agents containing lidocaine can also be used. Preparations containing these agents are available over the counter.

• Sitting in warm water using a sitz bath that fits over the commode seat 2 to 3 times a day for 10 to 15 minutes also helps.

• Eating a diet with high fiber content, taking plenty of fluid all through the day, regular exercise, and use of bulk-forming supplements like Metamucil or Citrucel which respectively contain psyllium and methylcellulose can be helpful in this condition.

• You should have at least 20 to 30 grams of fibre in your diet everyday and also avoid long sitting especially on commode.

• If the conservative treatment does not help office procedures like rubber band treatment or injection of a sclerosant into enlarged hemorrhoids can be used.

• In a small proportion of patients, hemorrhoidectomy that is the removal of hemorrhoids surgically is required.
