Yes, the Abscess is because the skin over top of the infection grows over the actual site or the opening and the opening is needed to let the bacteria escape as well as the fluid that naturally collects. Usually we have to pack these with sterile gauze to allow it to heal from the inside out. The issue with you is it's trying to close before all of the fluid has been released

I don't think there's much of a concern about this spreading and turning into sepsis I really don't see that happening, with the size of this and my experience with smaller abscesses like this I think that's probably unlikely. I am starting to get concerned that you're not getting appropriate care period I say that because typically with any type of Abscess and particularly one that's producing pus and blood one of the first things that we're going to do is put you on antibiotics and start packing this with sterile gauze as I had mentioned. That's really the only way to prevent this from growing over as I had mentioned before. one thing that may be a suggestion is to talk to your physician and ask to actually be referred to a wound care specialist. That might be the best way of going about this. You've done certainly your due diligence here and I think it's time that you actually had a wound specialist look at this

Understood, as an ER doc I can tell you that the ER can in fact open and pack this if you need them too, not pleasant I agree but they can also treat the pain

Technically speaking yes but I have to be honest with you it takes a more significant infection and it has to go deeper for it to actually get down to the Bony structures. We can certainly see that but we usually see it in diabetic patients where the wound is substantially deeper usually inches in depth

So you certainly can change your hospitals that's never a problem, personally I would start with going to a wound care specialist they are going to be the best possible option for getting a quick resolution for this. Plus they can do all the testing and they can do any type of wound debridement that would be needed. But that being said going to the Cleveland Clinic is never a bad idea
