I am 58 years old and in my last two comprehensive physicals, a hypothyroid test showed I had a borderline problem. My father, brother and sister all take medication for hypthyroid. I have had the classic symptoms fo extreme fatigue, lack of sleep, constipation, no sex drive, dry skin, brittle hair, thinning hair and eating very little and not being able to lose weight. Yet recently my doctor decided I didn't need any medication at this time. I have had two hip replacements due to osteoarthritis and have read recently that there is a link to hypothyroidism. I workout four to five times a week but feel tired all the time. Is there another reason for these symptoms?

Dear Dr., I am 74 years old and have been on Fosamax for 18 months. Recently, I had a full-body scan in relation to an ongoing carcinoid cancer that has metastasized to the liver. The scan showed a suspicious area in the skull. A neurologist diagnosed this as some kind of "bony" growth or lesion--not thought to be a tumor or related to my cancer. However, if this "lesion" is growing, it would have to be attended to.
I'm wondering if Fosamax could have any connection to this situation, and, as a precaution, I have stopped taking it until someone can convince me otherwise.
Can you shed any light on this situation? My last full-body scan was about eight years ago and showed nothing unusual in the head. Thanks for your expertise. Anne Favo
