Second opinion] I have a question regarding a lung function test result. I'm an asthmatic, non-smoker. Can I speak with someone knowledgeable on this topic.

Doctor's Assistant: What are all the symptoms you're experiencing (e.g. loss of appetite, fever, rash)?

No, non of these. Is there a physician on-line?

Doctor's Assistant: Anything else in your medical history you think the doctor should know?

Yes, recently, about two years ago, I experienced significant exacerbations and my asthma was not well controlled. I was using Ventolin 5-10 times a day and waking up at night. I was put on Flovent with little improvement and recently my medication was switched to symbicourt and this has significantly improved my symptoms and now I rarely use or need to take Ventolin. However, I still notice when I exert myself I have tightens in my chest which improves with Ventolin. On a recent lung function test the results were that I had a normal FEV1 (100% if I recall correctly) but my vital volume is "slightly" low. The conclusion was restriction with origins in the parenchyma. What does this mean and what are the consequences?

Doctor's Assistant: What medications do you take daily? Are you allergic to any medications?

I take symbicourt, Cardizem and Lipitor. No allergies that I know of but I have moderate to severe environmental allergies.

how old are you?

are you male or female?

what is your height and weight?

do you have bad anxiety symptoms?

if you are slightly overweight and have a belly, this can keep you from taking a proper deep breath and blowing out a full tidal volume.

did you smoke before

regular exercise, deep breathing exercises can help you take deeper breaths and have better vital capacity measurements

Thank you to the Physician who answered my question today. The answer was far more informative than what I got from the Physicians I saw in person for my problem.

You have been more help than you know. I seriously don't know what my sisters situation would be today if you had not gone above and beyond just answering my questions.
