Customer Question
My heart rate is...

My heart rate is low. 50-60 while I am sitting. When I get up and move it can gets to 100-120 and when I set back down, it drops within seconds back to 50-60. Is this a problem?

Doctor's Assistant: Do you know if your family has a history of heart disease? In general, how would you describe your health lately?

Yes, my family does have heart disease. My brother died at 50 with heart attack, my sister had 2 strokes at 48. I am pretty healthy. I exercise 5 days a week. I am overweight but have been working on that. Not hugely overweight, but am overweight. I have had some GERD symptoms lately also.

Doctor's Assistant: Anything else in your medical history you think the doctor should know?

I have hypothyrodism, had a recent hyperparathyroidectomy recently and a pituritary tumor. I have asthma also.

Heart rate increasing or decreasing is not a problem unless you have symptoms of dizziness, palpitations, chest pain or shortness of breath etc. A postural increase in heart rate can be due to a drop in blood pressure when one stands from a sitting position, this is known as postural hypotension and the most common cause is dehydration. I will suggest that you keep yourself hydrated and if this continues to happen, schedule an appointment with your PCP for an evaluation.

Thank you to the Physician who answered my question today. The answer was far more informative than what I got from the Physicians I saw in person for my problem.

You have been more help than you know. I seriously don't know what my sisters situation would be today if you had not gone above and beyond just answering my questions.
