I appear to have the symptoms of deep vein thrombosis, somewhat swollen right foot and lower leg this morning, significant pain below my knee on the posterior portion of my lower leg. Is this an emergency matter, or can I wait until morning to see my MD/Cardiologist.

Doctor's Assistant: What seems to make the symptoms worse or better? Any redness or swelling in the leg?

Adduction/flexure of my foot causes significant pain, little pain at rest. Swelling is less at present, relative to this morning..

Doctor's Assistant: Anything else in your medical history you think the doctor should know?

I've had bypass surgery some years ago, I'm a Ph,D. geologist and emeritus university professor. I'm still active in the field (in the out of doors) working on several professional projects. Primary and cardio MD's tell me keep doing what you are doing. Can give you a list of my meds.

I am happy to text you.

Those pop ups are automatic, not controlled by me. I am also happy to take your phone call.

So the blood thinner Plavix, is more protective for arteries, and not so much for the veins.

I am male. I am not looking for a neurologist.

I would go to the Emergency Department immediately. We like to treat DVT's right away to prevent pulmonary embolism (the clot traveling to the lungs), prevent the clot from spreading, and reduce the chances of postthrombotic syndrome. At your age, with your history and medications, that I what I would recommend. I am sorry. I am a surgeon.

My question is .... should I go to the ER now or to the MD/Cardiologist tomorrow.

I would go now. If you were my dad, I would take you in for a Doppler of your extremities right now. Yep. Not even a second thought.

The greatest risk is developing a PE (pulmonary embolism).

Sorry.

Anything else?

OK, I understand about pulmonary embolism

Quite serious when they happen. Need to prevent it, plus the sooner you are treated, the better it will feel.

Thanks I'm on my way.

Awesome, 5 star this if it was useful! And let me know how it goes, I will still be here!
