I wonder if there...

I wonder if there is any correlation between aging and anxiety. I never seemed particularly anxious when I was younger. I am now 73 and hate dealing with feeling anxious.

Doctor's Assistant: How long have you been dealing with this? Is there anything in particular that seems to make the symptoms better or worse?

Probably since I went through menopause at about age 53. I am always better when I am not alone or am occupied with something that interests me, but I used to be pretty calm and good natured when I was younger. Stressful situations usually make it worse.

Doctor's Assistant: Anything else in your medical history you think the doctor should know?

I have been taking Effexor (Venilafaxine) since my brother died in about 2002 and also Toprol, since roughly that period because I have SVT and didn't want to have an ablation. I retired from a job I loved in 2012, went through a divorce in 2014 and moved from Texas to CT in 2015 to help a daughter who has two small children and no husband. I am seeing a therapist and enjoy being with her, but I don't usually discuss my past with her and I never feel anxious around her, so I usually don't mention it.

Aging is not related with increase anxiety itself but some factors like increase stresses and loneliness can be the causative factors. I would suggest discussing this issue of increased anxiety with your therapist and try to indulge in social activities and exercise regularly to keep yourself busy.

Thank you. I'm not sure how I stumbled onto this site, so I'm not sure what to expect here. One thing I wanted to find out recently was whether clinical studies have shown that taking Effexor for a long period of time can have any adverse effects of consequence on the body. I would agree that increased stresses and loneliness are definitely an issue. I just have to be more resourceful, more self disciplined, and yet kinder to myself.

All the antidepressants have side effects of causing memory loss in the long-term use and other long-term side effects of effexor include increased blood pressure and weight loss.
