Customer Question
In the past I...

In the past I have afib, it has been treated successfully for 23 years, in the past few weeks I have noticed occasional palpations or skipped beats. This is far different than the afib heart beat, I have my annual visit with my cardiologist the end of January, should I be concerned and move my appt forward?

Doctor's Assistant: Do you know if your family has a history of heart disease? In general, how would you describe your health lately?

Good, I am VERY active, no family history of heart disease. The only meds I take are tambocor and symbicort ingaler.

Doctor's Assistant: Anything else in your medical history you think the doctor should know?

None I can think of. I am overweight but that's it.

Well, Having symptoms, Skipped heartbeat and palpitations, should be further checked by you doctor.

Possible reasons are-

-Low potassium,
-Low blood sugar,
-Imbalance of electrolytes, mineral in body,
-Too much caffeine, chocolate or alcohol,
-Overactive thyroid,
-Anemia,
-Stress, anxiety, or panic attack.

Arrhythmias may include very fast heart rates (tachycardia), unusually slow heart rates (bradycardia) or an irregular heart rhythm (atrial fibrillation).

To make a diagnose, you need to have-
-Blood work including Thyroid profile, Electrolyte levels, Blood sugar levels, Complete blood count
-EKG
-A 24-hour recording of your heart beat which is called as Holter monitor

It becomes important to check heart and if required heart ultrasound called as Echo can be done.
A thorough clinical examination along with tests should be done to make a perfect diagnose.

In your case, Stress/ Anxiety issue can be the most common cause.

One should avoid caffeine, alcohol.

You should get engaged in aerobic exercise and stress-management techniques like deep breathing and yoga.

You should laugh more or watch a comedy or read a funny book.

You should connect with friends and family.

You can go for meditating, it would quiet your mind.

I would recommend that, it is not an emergency issue, and you can wait till January and get it further evaluated by your Cardiologist.

Hope this helped
