Customer Question
Recently been diagnosed with...

Recently been diagnosed with gastroparesis, solely caused by the Norco I've been taking for over 10 year's for my RA and fibromyalgia? Why would it take over 10 year's and couldn't this be linked more to my rheumatoid arthritis than medicine?

Doctor's Assistant: What medications do you take daily? Are you allergic to any medications?

Allergies to sulfa meds, also have lots of rotten egg burps. Cymbalta, plaquenil, celebrex, protonix, Norco, lorazepam, b12, calcium w vit D3, zyrtec, zanaflex, now reglan which I'm not tolerating makes me feel drunk, probiotic off/on, imitrex PRN, benadryl PRN

Doctor's Assistant: Anything else in your medical history you think the doctor should know?

Not that I can think of

How long have you been on Plaquenil? And what symptoms are you having with the gastroparesis?

Ask Your Own Medical Question
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
Since 2008. Nausea, vomiting food eaten 8+ hours ago and abdominal pain, palor, sulfa burps and just recently I had sulfa gas, sometime i feel faint. I also have IUD marina placed 2 years ago. Symptoms started about a year after IUD placement.
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
I can not afford the call.
Doctor: Dr. Mo, Board Certified MD replied 3 months ago

It's quite possible that the hydrocodone in norco is what's contributing to the gastroparesis. However, rheumatoid arthritis can in rare circumstances contribute to the problem as well. I don't believe the IUD or the Plaquenil would be the cause. However, I can see why your doctor wants to stop the norco first because it's the most likely cause often.

What do i do then about my moderateto sometime severe pain? At times i can not walk bc of pain hardly?
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
I have to work to have healthcare insurance.
Doctor: Dr. Mo, Board Certified MD replied 3 months ago

There are other kinds of pain medications besides norco. I would discuss that with your primary care doctor or specialists but there are medications such as Lyrica, gabapentin, or nortriptyline. As for the question you posted, is there anything else I can expand upon regarding the gastroparesis?

What can i do about the sulfa burps and gas
Doctor: Dr. Mo, Board Certified MD replied 3 months ago

If the food is not passing through the stomach into the small intestines unfortunately there isn't any good way to treat it, even with the proton pump inhibitor that you are on. Our patients who have chronic or permanent gastroparesis often modify their diet and switch to a mostly plant based diet and will minimize their meal sizes so as to make sure everything passes through before introducing more food and stay away from meats and breads which increase the sulfur burps.

Why would Norco cause this after 10 years would it not have started years ago
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
A plant based diet although I've been told not to eat raw veg or fruit
Doctor: Dr. Mo, Board Certified MD replied 3 months ago

The longer you take opioids for, the higher the chance of chronic side effects such as mood changes, gastroparesis, and fatigue.

Ask Your Own Medical Question
Doctor: Dr. Mo, Board Certified MD replied 3 months ago

A plant based diet can be consumed with cooked vegetables and raw/ripe fruits which shouldn't cause as much of an issue.

Could the gastroparesis be gallbladder related
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
My primary doc recommend some kind of biliary drainage test
Doctor: Dr. Mo, Board Certified MD replied 3 months ago
It’s unlikely to be gallbladder related unless you are having major pains in the gallbladder region.
