Customer Question
My 16 year old...

My 16 year old son was sent home from school 2 weeks ago with a low grade fever. His on going symptoms are severe headeache, joint pain and very tired. No fever. He lives with his mother in an upper elevation and my fear was Lyme Disease. His doctor has no idea. What are your thoughts?

Doctor's Assistant: Is the headache episodic or daily? And what about nausea?

Yes, all day and very dizzy.

I'm sorry to hear about your son. Has his doctor done any blood work? Did your son play outside approximately 2-3 weeks ago? Was there a rash at one point? Do you own any pets?

His mother just text me, no rash no sore throat

If you can get a copy of the test results, I would be happy to take a look for you.

There are several tests that can be done based on his symptoms in order to look for lyme, mononucleosis, chronic fatigue syndrome, etc. He should be tested with a complete blood count with differential, Lyme by ELISA, mono, EBV, RPR, ANA, ESR, and CRP to start.

I will have to ask his mother for the report.

Aside from the items I mentioned above, there are some viral illnesses that can last up to a month. Sometimes, the flu can also present like you mentioned. But, considering he lives in the north, ruling out Lyme is definitely important. Diagnoses aside, be sure your son stays hydrated with twice as much fluids as he normally drinks on a daily basis. Dehydration can make all symptoms feel worse and can cause headaches, nausea, and dizziness.

I will keep the question open in case you can get a copy of the test results for me to see what's been done and what else could be done. If you have other questions about your son's concern, let me know. Otherwise, please take a moment to rate me a 5, or let me know how I can improve.
