Customer Question
Hello. I have...

Hello. I have trouble with esophagus having spasms. Right now I have not been able to eat or drink anything for 3 hours. Swallowing saliva results in it coming back up within short time. Can't seem to get spasm to stop.

Doctor's Assistant: What are all the symptoms you're experiencing (e.g. loss of appetite, fever, rash)?

No. This is a problem for some years. Seems to happen when I am with other people having a meal. Not choking because not invoved with airway. Now it really seems a spasm

Doctor's Assistant: Anything else in your medical history you think the doctor should know?

Just know I do have heart burn occasionally. This is not heartburn tho.

Doctor's Assistant: Do you know if your family has a history of heart disease? In general, how would you describe your health lately?

Yes. There is heart disease but I am healthy. However I am under stress. This is the longest time I have had this spasm. Don't know how to relieve it

have you ever seen a doctor for this issue in the past or had an upper endoscopy done?

Ask Your Own Medical Question

I had an upper endoscopy done probably 10 years ago now. My doctor said....nothing wrong physically. Slow down when eating. Problem is I don't eat fast.
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
I have always been able to relax or the spasm goes away. This time it has been hours. I hoped I could get a suggestion on how to relax the spasm.
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
Hello? Any help on what to do to relieve the spasm.
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
I realize I'm not dying. Just don't know what I can do. Even acupressure would be helpful. Is that it? I did not hear back from you!
Doctor: Doctor John MD, Board Certified MD replied 7 months ago

yes, would try club soda if you have it available.

Ask Your Own Medical Question

the carbonation can help relieve the spasm.
Often times we will prescribe nitroglycerin or a blood pressure medication in the calcium channel blocker family for continued management.

Well. I cannot get any fluids to pass. I appreciate what you say but this is not heartburn I cannot get fluid or salvia or food to go past my esophagus. Thank you. I will ask my doctor maybe tomorrow. In the meantime I am carrying a bucket around. Thanks.
Doctor: Doctor John MD, Board Certified MD replied 7 months ago

if the spasm is severe enough where you cant swallow, then I would recommend going to the ER where they can give you sublingual nitro to stop the spasm.
