Hello,I am Dr.Aren and I will help with your query. The Extra-Corporal Shock Wave Lithotripsy(ESWL) is widely used to treat kidney stones but is not favoured to treat gall stones. The procedure is usually successful if you have upto 3 stones,it does not work if there are more stones.Secondly ,it works well with cholesterol stones and not with pigmented stones.Use of oral bile acid pill/UrsedeoxyCholic Acid or Ursediol is effective therapy in dissolving the gall stones gradually over 2-4 months.Further the presence of gall stones in the biliary duct may create problems,as also recurrence in over 50% cases makes Lithotripsy no the preferred method for treating gall stones.Usually a Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy which is minimally invasive ( involves a short hospital stay of 1-3 days) and removes the gall stones with the gall bladder is the preferred method.THis will also eliminate the problem of recurrence.Use of Ursediol can also help most patients with transient diaorrhea and minor stomach upset as the side effects. It would depend on you and your doctor to decide which method you would prefer.
