Once again I am sorry to hear about the tumor diagnosis in your relative

I see he has been diagnosed with glioblastoma tumor of the brain

This tumor is also called as GBM (Glioblastoma multiforme)

GBM is the commonest cancerous brain tumor, and sorry to say it is considered as a very aggressive form of cancer

The life expectancy varies but overall it is considered as a rapidly progressive brain cancer.

If patients do not receive any form of treatments then the survival is approximately about 3 months since the diagnosis

Having said that, with treatments the survival rate improves, and on an average patients survive about 12 to 15 months after the diagnosis – if they receive proper treatments

And there are some patients who survive longer, about 5% survive longer than 5 years since the diagnosis, and rarely some patients survive 10 to 20 years too

The following are the various treatment options that are tried to help patients with GBM;

1) Surgical resection or Debulking surgery

2) Radiation therapy

3) Chemotherapy etc

The following chemotherapy is usually tried;

Temozolomide (Temodar) + Bevacziumab (Avastin) - this combination chemotherapy is considered the best to treat GBM

Temodar + Rindopepimut – is another option

Gliadel wafer (polifeprosan with carmustine implant) can help in some cases

Chemotherapy + Optune TTF is also considered in some patients with improvement in the survival rate

There are some research or experimental treatments also tried and these too can help survival in some patients, and examples of such experimental treatments include the following;

Immunotherapy

Gene therapy

Immunotherapy + Gene therapy in combination

Genetically engineered stem cells to target glioblastomas

Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)–modified T-cell therapy etc

As you see there are varieties of treatments available for managing GBM. While overall it is considered as a highly malignant form of brain cancer, but some patients can survive very long after the diagnosis of this tumor, especially with aggressive treatments including the above mentioned treatment options, so please not to lose hopes.

Wishing your relative a quick & complete recovery!

All the very best!

Please let me know if you have any additional questions or if you want to discuss this further.

Assuring you the best services!

Best Regards!
