I have a 20...

I have a 20 year old son who has had stomach pains for 8 weeks, wend to doctor had blood work done all cam back normal, changed his diet 6 weeks ago to no red meats, no dairy mostly fruit, vegiies and lots of water. low alcohol intake for a collage student.

Doctor's Assistant: Have you had any recent injuries? What seems to make the pain better or worse?

He has pain in waste line and has a very high level of gas and gas pains. loose stool as well

Doctor's Assistant: Anything else in your medical history you think the doctor should know?

He did go to Costa rico over the summer for 3 weeks. problems started seveveral weeks after returning however.

He should get the following investigations done;

1) Ultrasound

2) CT scan

3) Liver function tests

4) Pancreatic function tests

5) Stool exam.

Meanwhile his doctor may consider giving him worm treatment.

Following also may help him;

1) Avoid

a) Cabbage

b) Beer

c) Legumes

d) Cheese

e) Beans

2) This may help;

a) Bismuth subsalicylate

b) Activated charcoal

c) Simethicone; (Maalox, Mylanta); Simethicone causes gas bubbles to break up.

d) Beano; contains an enzyme (alpha-galactosidase), which helps to breakdown certain complex carbohydrates.

All are available without prescription.

Avoid foods that appear to aggravate symptoms. These may include milk and dairy products, certain fruits or vegetables, whole grains, artificial sweeteners etc. But this is based on the personal observation for the aggravating food.

Discontinue the following if he does them;

1) gum chewing,

2) smoking,

3) drinking carbonated beverages, and

4) gulping food and liquids.
