My bladder has been painful lately. How can I check for

Customer Question

My bladder has been painful lately. How can I check for blood in the urine?
JA: In general, how has your health been lately?
Customer: For being 80, I'd say it has been pretty good.
JA: Anything else in your medical history you think the doctor should know?
Customer: I've always had a sensitive bladder but for the last month it has bothered me more. Cancer runs in the family--my grandmother, my mother, my father, my sister, etc. so I'm worried about bladder cancer.

Hello I'm Dr Chip

You can use an over the counter dipstick kit to see if there's microscopic blood and white cells in your urine

It sounds as though you may have a bladder infection and if the dipstick is positive for those you need to see your doctor for a course of oral antibiotics

Please let me know if you need any more information
