My 21 yr old son just showed me a grapefruit sized bruise

Customer Question

My 21 yr old son just showed me a grapefruit sized bruise behind his right knee with a hard lump in the middle, quarter size. He said it has gotten better since he noticed it two weeks ago. He had no injury. Can this occur from pressure of sitting on a chair with his knee bent? I am concerned it may be more worrisome.
JA: How long have you had the lump? Is it hard or soft?
Customer: My son noticed it two weeks ago and it is hard.
JA: Anything else in your medical history you think the doctor should know?
Customer: No, healthy young man.

Hello I'm Dr Chip

Could you please post a photo for me on this page?

Customer: replied 4 months ago.
I can't figure out how to post the photo. It won't copy and paste and I don't see a photo upload option.

Use the paper clip icon on this page

Customer: replied 4 months ago.
I don't see the paper clip anywhere (I use it often). I see only facebook, twitter and email options. I tried to attach it in "Add files." Can you open it?

Got it--thanks

Is this painful?

Customer: replied 4 months ago.
if you put pressure on it.
Expert:  Dr Chip (M.D.) replied 4 months ago.

Well nothing too serious here

This is bursitis--an inflammation of the bursal sac that surrounds the knee

It can just happen without any trauma

For now he can use over the counter topical capsaicin cream and take ibuprofen for it but he should have his doctor evaluate it since he may need a cortisone injection

Let me know if you need any more information

Customer: replied 4 months ago.
I realized from looking at it again that it is actually on the back of his thigh, just above knee level. If it is bursitis, what causes it?
Expert:  Dr Chip (M.D.) replied 4 months ago.

Still bursitis and oftentimes there isn't any trauma involved--it just happens

Thank you very much.
