Customer Question

Hi dr frank. Re the dog roundworm issue the folks I babysit for just found out their new puppy has roundworms. They have medication for it (Ribon liquid). My question is : how likely am I to catch them? I don't handle the puppy nor its things but the kids do.

Hello I'm Dr Chip

You've go nothing to worry about here

Puppies have worms before they get treated and even after that dogs still get worms, and humans simply can't be infected by those worms

In other words, the disease isn't transferred by any means from the dog to the human

Please let me know if you need any more information

Dr chip
This is not true at all. Yes humans can most certainly be infected with roundworms. Google it

Not in your case since you didn't handle the puppy's feces

What I meant is that humans don't get the worms unless they actually ingest the dogs' feces

No thanks. I'm not satisfied with the incorrect answer.

Ps the larvae can be transmitted by handling either clothing or dog feces or soil where the dog has shed eggs. If one touches ones eyes or mouth it most certainly is transmitted. Dos with roundworms are considered a public health hazard. My question is. How at risk am I. I pet the puppy before I knew and the owners didn't feel it necessary to tell me. He'd had one dose of dewormer.

The puppy has been running loose in the house although he's mostly crated.

This is Dr. David

you are right that round worms or Toxocara canis can be spread from animals to humans

but the chances of you contracting it is super super super small

first you just petted the puppy, that is it. you didn't come into contact with stool or ingest stool.

the puppy had started treatment with dewormer.

washing your hands after being close to the animal is the best way to prevent infection

it sounds like you are very worried

I bet you will not contract the worm

let me know if you have questions.
