Customer Question

I had half my thyroid removed three weeks ago and need to have other side done after vocal cord heals but the last few days my lymph node hurts is that normal after surgery?
JA: How long have you had the pain? What seems to make the pain better or worse?
Customer: Just this last week .. no problems after surgery except the damaged vocal cord and it's getting better! When I yawn it hurts and swallowing I can feel it right under my ear
JA: Anything else in your medical history you think the doctor should know?
Customer: No I'm healthy

Hello, this is Dr. David. I am reviewing your question now and will be with you momentarily.

I am sorry you are having some pain in your lymph nodes

viral infections can cause your lymph nodes to swell up and be tender and sore.

lymph nodes can also swell up after recent surgery close by

these lymph nodes should get slowly better over time

gargling with some salt water and using some cool packs on your neck and surgery area can help

let me know if you have questions.

It didn't bother me until three weeks later I'm just worried if the cancer could spread and that would be the cause? I go back May 30th to have the other sister of the thyroid removed! It is follicular cancer
Expert:  Dr. David replied 4 months ago.

cancer would not spread that quickly to cause your lymph nodes to be sore at this point.

I am a cancer doctor. you will do fine with the surgery on the other side.

Just want to make sure it is just part of the healing process. I haven't had pain until now
Customer: replied 4 months ago.
I'm surprised it is hurting after so long after surgery
Expert:  Dr. David replied 4 months ago.

cancer would not cause pain there

you most likely are still healing

it could be a new viral infection causing lymph node swelling.
