I've had diarrhea for over 5 days. Loss of appetite, Nothing

Customer Question

I've had diarrhea for over 5 days.
JA: What are all the symptoms you're experiencing (e.g. loss of appetite, fever, rash)?
Customer: Loss of appetite
JA: Anything else in your medical history you think the doctor should know?
Customer: Nothing else other than I'm not a very healthy eater. I also thought it started when I had a cold and took mucinex for the cold and sore throat
JA: How long have you had the symptoms? Do you have a fever?
Customer: Those symptoms have since subsided but the diarrhea is still in full effect.

Hello I'm Dr Chip

Any fever or abdominal pain with this?

Customer: replied 4 months ago.
At first, it started with cramping. Now I don't.
Customer: replied 4 months ago.
Just a constant rumbling sound
Expert:  Dr Chip (M.D.) replied 4 months ago.

OK

Most often this is a viral gastroenteritis--that so-called "stomach bug."

Usually it runs its course in a week's time

For now, I suggest nothing like Imodium for it--just oral probiotics and a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water twice a day along with plenty of electrolyte-rich fluids like juices and GatorAde along with the BRAT diet--bananas, rice, applesauce and toast

But if it continues beyond another two days you need to see your doctor for an exam and a stool culture to see if it's bacterial like E coli, salmonella or C diff in which case you'll need a course of antibiotics for it

Please let me know if you need any more information

What are symptoms to look for if it is something more serious? Also, the first or second day my stool was black and a bit tarry almost sludge looking
Customer: replied 4 months ago.
I don't know if that changes the diagnosis

Fever, severe abdominal pain

The sludgy stool is typical for a virus

Customer: replied 4 months ago.
The gastroenteritis or an e-coli virus?
Expert:  Dr Chip (M.D.) replied 4 months ago.

E coli is bacterial--this is a viral gastroenteritis
