I was woken up last night at 2:45 am with terrible chest

Customer Question

I was woken up last night at 2:45 am with terrible chest pain. I got up and took 2 baby aspirin and after about 5 minutes, it went away. Can you have a heart attack while sleeping?
JA: Have you ever dealt with this before? Are you having any shortness of breath?
Customer: No, no shortness of breath. I have had episodes like this a few years ago and went to the hospital and they said I was having panic attacks.
JA: Anything else in your medical history you think the doctor should know?
Customer: Well, my mom had heart problems and had a triple bypass but she was a heavy smoker, I do not smoke.

Dear customer,

Thank you for your question.

To answer your question, yes, it is very much possible and frequently seen that a person can have a heart attack during sleep.

To confirm you need to have blood tests done.

Expert:  Dr. Ravoof replied 9 months ago.

If the blood tests are negative along with a normal electrocardiogram, then most likely this is once again a panic attack similar to those you had in the past.
