Customer Question

Some med lit says that one must discontinue use of somastatins three days before having an Octreoscan for cardinoid neuro-endicrine tumors because the statins block the receptors on the NET cells and therefore do not "lightup" in the scan. Is that not true as well, i.e. statin blocking receptors, for regular CT scans with iopomidol infusion>
JA: Are you keeping a personal medical record while dealing with this?
Customer: no
JA: Anything else in your medical history you think the doctor should know?
Customer: no, I think it is a straight-forward technical question

Hello, this is Dr. David. I am reviewing your question now and will be with you momentarily.

Expert:  Dr. David replied 9 months ago.

why are you taking the somatostatins? as a dietary supplement?

who is giving you this?

are you getting sandostatin treatment for your carcinoid tumor?

Customer: replied 9 months ago.
No, I am taking simvastatin for cholesterol reduction at the suggestion of my primary care physician and a Mayo neurologist, so the issue is, since I am having a regular CT scan with iopomidol infusion to identify any new carcinoid growth, and since statins apparently can block carcinoid receptors in octreoscans, does one need to discontinue statin use for three days before the regular CT scan as is recommended for octreoscans.

you have to stop somatostatin or octreotide therapy prior to octreotide scans.

you don't have to stop simvastatin cholesterol medication.
