Customer Question

There is some red coloration in my stool, not sure if something I ate or blood. I've had cranberry juice in the last two hours and frequently drink pomegranate juice but I'm concerned because I'm being treated for gastritis and taking medication but still have abdominal pain after several months...
JA: What medications do you take daily? Are you allergic to any medications?
Customer: I take 20 mg omeprazole, not allergenic that I know of. I have also gone on a strict diet and taking prebiotic supplements as well as deglycyrrhizinated licorice extract.
JA: Anything else in your medical history you think the doctor should know?
Customer: I've always been healthy family is healthy as well although when I came down with gastritis two siblings told me they have either that or reflux.

Myself Dr Josh- and I’m happy to help with your question today.

Please provide me the following information so that I can address your concern-

Do you have pain at time of passing stool?

Did red discoloration in stool occurred once only?

Do you have severe abdomen cramps?

I have been having some pain for last several months on right side, gi dr is treating g me for gastritis and prescribed omeprazole 20 mg. This is the 1st time I note any red discoloration in stool and not sure if it's blood or not it's in the stool and not bright or dark red and not coagulating in the water. I also had carrots with my chicken soup last night as well as cranberry juice every morning. My pain usually goes away or reduces after a BM and I don't have any stomach cramps. I'm wondering if I should collect the stool as a sample?

Thanks for all these additional details.

Well, Having such red coloration in stool can surely give you a start, and immediately make you think it is blood, but there are a few reasons that a stool can be red that aren't due to blood.

In medical terms it is called as “False” Hematochezia.

It can change color from brown to red due to-

  • Red gelatin, popsicles, or Kool-Aid
  • Tomato juice or soup
  • Large amounts beets
  • Anything colored with red food coloring like pomegranate/ carrot.

It is normal to have such such red colored stool, especially after Pomegranate Juice .

No need to worry at all.

This is not blood, No need to get panic.

It may take 1-2 days, before stool turn to normal color.

Good to hear that you are following a healthy diet.

You should always drink up to eight glasses of water a day.

You should remain away from stress and anxiety.

Start practicing Yoga and meditation. Deep breathing exercises and relaxation techniques will be helpful for gastritis.

Also you should eat meals at least 2 to 3 hours before bedtime.

No need to worry, for such discoloration in stool. This is completely normal.

I don’t think that you need to get stool test done.

You can wait for two days, and I am sure stool would turn back to normal color.

Hope this helped
