Customer Question

My 65 yr old boyfriend was just diagnosed with liver cancer and hapatitis C. He has a large tumor on his liver. He has been told by an onologist in Portland that they cannot remove the tumor surgically and that chemo or radiation may kill him. Please advise.
JA: Are you keeping a personal medical record while dealing with this?
Customer: We just started one.
JA: Anything else in your medical history you think the doctor should know?

Hello, this is Dr. David. I am reviewing your question now and will be with you momentarily.

Expert:  Dr. David replied 9 months ago.

I am sorry about your boyfriend

they should biopsy the liver mass.

it may be a hepatocellular carcinoma.

how sick is he? the liver mass definitely will kill him

if he is not a surgical candidate, he should try radiation and chemotherapy to try to shrink the tumor

does he have medicare insurance?

Customer: replied 9 months ago.
No insurance other than Medicare. He just became ill 1 week ago. He is jaundiced, weak, had 4.8 liters parenthentesis yesterday. An oncologist told him chemo and/or radiation would probably kill him within two weeks. He was also told the tumor was too large for surgery.
Expert:  Dr. David replied 9 months ago.

it is up to him if he wants to try radiation or chemo

the chances for cure are super super low.

he can also have hospice care and comfort care

he may live longer than 2 weeks without treatment.

what does he want to do?

Customer: replied 9 months ago.
Are there types of chemo or radiation that won't kill him?
Customer: replied 9 months ago.
How long will he survive without any treatment?
Expert:  Dr. David replied 9 months ago.

you can ask his doctors about

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22941023

Yttrium 90 microspheres for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma

it can be expensive, but it could shrink down his hepatocellular cancer and help his symptoms.

no one can say how long he will live without treatment. only god knows that

he could live a few days, weeks, months, or longer.

Thank you. I read that this treatment is only good for small tumors...
Customer: replied 9 months ago.
Would it be beneficial to contact a hepatitis specialist?
Expert:  Dr. David replied 9 months ago.

it can be used for larger HCC as well.

he should contact a radiation oncology department which does treatment with Yttrium 90 or find a clinical trail for HCC or Y90 for him to enroll into
