Hello. What symptoms do you have? If you have acute onset of swelling, redness or lower extremity pain you need to first have it diagnosed by an ultrasound. This can be done either as an outpatient after your primary care physician orders you an ultrasound or through the er. If you do have a DVT on that ultrasound they will prescribe you a blood thinner. You only need the blood thinner if you have a DVT and that can only be prescribed after an IN-PERSON visit face to face by either your primary care physician or ER physician. You'd be on that medication for 3-6 months with repeat ultrasounds at later times. If you have a very extensive deep venous thrombus they may refer you to an Interventional Radiologist to have the clot removed through a catheter inserted behind the knee.
