My 3 yr old grandson has difficulty with s bowel movements.

Customer Question

My 3 yr old grandson has difficulty with his bowel movements. He complains, "It hurts," and his stool is huge. A typical stool is about as large as a medium cucumber. It bothers him so much he holds it as long as possible. Is there a medical specialty that deals with this type of problem?

This is Dr. David

this is very common in 3 year olds who don't eat enough fiber in their diet.

often times they don't want to eat fruits or vegetables.

it is very common for for 3 year olds to not want to have bowel movements and hold it in which causes larger stools as well.

he will get through this phase

is he willing to eat corn or apples or prunes or carrots to help him soften his stools?
