I am 30 weeks pregnant and I just recently got diagnosed

Customer Question

I am 30 weeks pregnant and I just recently got diagnosed with gestational diabetes and I have been testing my blood sugars regularly.I had to go to the emergency room today to get a piece of glass removed from my foot after I had stepped on some broken glass. The ER doc used lidocaine (without epinephrine) to numb the area before getting it out. That was the only med used. I ate lunch and had a meal that I normally eat without elevated sugars but when I did my routine testing it was significantly higher than usual at the 2 hour mark.My question to you is what is the likelihood that the lidocaine injection raised my blood sugar level?

Hi there,
This is Dr Basu, experienced Internal Medicine Specialist.
I am here to address your concerns and provide great service.

Lidocaine does not usually raise the blood sugar level.

However the stress from the glass piece injury and also the removal process itself can increase the blood sugar level temporarily.

You should see improvement in the level over next 2 days.
Best wishes,
It was my pleasure to help you today.
