My almost 18 year old daughter has been a vegan 4 months.

Customer Question

My almost 18 year old daughter has been a vegan for about 4 months. For the past 2 days, she has been feeling very dizzy and nauseated when she stands up. it got so bad she was not able to go to school this past Friday. Do you think this is diet related or something else? We just traveled from Seattle to CT by plane on Sunday 2/21. Could this be vertigo? Should she see our doctor?

Hi there,
This is Dr Basu, experienced Internal Medicine Specialist.
I am here to address your concerns and provide great service.

Most likely vertigo.

Viral infection can cause acute labyrinthitis.

Inflammation of the inner ear balance organ can cause this commonly.

May last for several days but do subside gradually.

Your daughter should take adequate rest, drink fluids.

Over the counter Meclizine 25 mg upto 3 times daily can be taken to control the symptoms.

She should see a doctor locally also.
Best wishes,
It was my pleasure to help you today.

This is Dr. David

being vegan can increase chances of her being low in B12 and iron levels.

she could have an inner ear infection.

she could have a viral infection.

she could be having low blood sugar levels.

she needs to see a doctor and get a full physical exam and full blood panel tests and check of her ears and blood test for iron and ferritin and B12 levels

flying by plane can increase risks for viral infections and also can cause some inner ear issues in some patients.

do you have a doctor she can go see for testing?
