My husband has been unable to eat or drink anything all day!

Customer Question

My husband has been unable to eat or drink anything all day! He feels like his esophagus has closed and when he tried to swallow some ginger ale it came back up with phlegm! What could this be?

Thank you for your question.

It may be an esophageal stricture or narrowing of the esophagus or the other possibility is that there may be something stuck in the lower part of the esophagus (food pipe).

I would recommend that he be seen in the ER particularly since his symptoms are severe as he will likely require an upper GI endoscopy (a camera down his throat to have a look as to what is going on inside the esophagus) and then proceed accordingly.
