Customer Question

My grandma is 72 and she has a lot of trouble sleeping. She says that she can only sleep one or two hours a night and she spends most of the night just laying on the bed, she says that she is very tired at night but she just can't sleep, she also says that she hears either a drumming or a humming sound when she tries to sleep. We have tried to buy sleeping pills for her but the pill only makes it worst, the sleeping pill makes her legs very restless and makes her sleep even less. She has a normal blood pressure but she has a high heart rate, 91 beats per seconds. She also tires really easily, a normal walk in the park can get her entire body sore, heart pounding, and breathing heavily, as if she had ran a marathon. Her mouth also becomes dry easily, and she needs to drink large amounts of water.

This is Dr. David

she needs her thyroid hormone levels checked.

high thyroid hormone levels can cause fast heart rate and poor ability to sleep.

has she had her thyroid hormone levels checked?

There are a lot of potential problems here.

Sleep apnea. This needs a sleep study.

Buzzing in the ears is tinnitus: this can be from an ear problem, a brain problem, or vascular problem, a problem with the blood vessels.

Also, she needs an EKG, and heart exam.

Apparently she has not seen a doctor and she needs a geriatric asessment.

A holter monitor is needed as well, to see what the heart is doing.

Thyroid can be screened, but with hypothyroid the heart is usually not pounding. With hyper, there is usually diarrhea, tremor, etc.

This is Dr. David

hyperthyroidism can cause fast heart rate, weigh loss, poos sleep, dry skin, and cold be affecting her sleep

fast heart rate from hyperthyroidism can cause heart beat sounds in the ears at night time as well.

sleep apnea would tend to be caused by snoring and being overweight.

if she is just lying in bed awake, this doesn't sound like sleep apnea.

if her EKG is normal, most likely she doesn't need a holter monitor test.
